The Ozone Blanket

Materialism continues to be an issue in today’s society – in the words of designer Kiki van Beerendonk, “we all want more stuff, more clothes, more shoes.” This tendency towards materialism ties in with the much larger problem of climate change. As companies urge factories to churn out as many products as quickly as possible to keep up with demand, large amounts of waste and byproducts are released into the environment. Moved by the issue and wanting to design something that would make an impact, Kiki van Beerendonk turned to materialliance for inspiration. Together, we collaborated to develop the Ozone Blanket.

Editor's Note

The intent behind the blanket is to encourage consumers to confront the impact of climate change on the environment. What initially appears to be splashes of color on a bold background, after careful scrutiny, reveals the Arctic ice caps melting at a rapid pace. To complement the stunning visual, the text on the bottom portion of the blanket emphasizes just how much of the ice caps were lost and the wildlife affected by this loss. By putting the spotlight on climate change in the form of a blanket, something we often use daily, van Beerendonk hopes that it challenges us to be more mindful in our day to day about the impact we have on our environment.
